Most of us are feeling like we need a break right now, what a year it’s been! To celebrate the final days of summer, we explore some close-to-home destinations from four major US cities. Each accessible by car, the leisurely getaways are just what’s needed to build stamina for the coming months—bon voyage.

From NYC to the Hudson Valley

Troutbeck

A two-hour drive outside of the city—perhaps making a stop at Storm King, which is on the way—will land you at this magical property. With a storied history spanning more than 250 years, you can feel authenticity and inspiration emanate from the walls. Several unique rooms create the atmosphere of visiting a friend; bring some friends and enquire about the Century Lodge or the Garden House, two separate buildings which each have four bedrooms.

Go for a swim, play some tennis; maybe go for a horseback ride. Activities are in abundance: they can even arrange fly fishing or Pilates. We recommend relaxing by the pool, drinking rosé (on-tap) and eating a lobster roll with a good book in hand to create a sense of true escapism.

From Miami to Key West

Casa Marina

Scenic and classically American, this quick trip is a must-do and makes for an ideal getaway. Pile into a convertible, and set to the road, stopping to refuel at the famous Robert Is Here fruit stand in Homestead—we advise trying a papaya milkshake.

Book a room at Casa Marina. The historic property has a private beach, and many activities are on-site to take advantage of the sea. From diving to jet skiing (you can encircle the entire island) to parasailing, you can maximise your time on the oceanfront. Venture into the relaxed town for a slice of mile-high Key Lime Pie at Blue Heaven; a local icon for the past 25 years.

From LA to Santa Barbara

Belmond El Encanto

This leisurely trip capitalises on the journey itself—much of the 1.5-hour(ish) drive is alongside the ocean, on the PCH. Pleasure culminates in the destination, the glamorous 100-year-old Belmond El Encanto. The beautiful property is the kind of place you wished you lived. Strikingly stylish whilst still being homey and comfortable, it beckons relaxation and is the ideal place to recharge.

Spend lazy afternoons poolside, overlooking the Pacific, with a glass of local wine in hand. Enjoy a picnic, packed with all the accoutrements in a classic basket, on the grounds; explore the gardens. The only reason to leave is for a visit to McConnell’s Ice Cream—this homegrown favourite serves up some of the best in the country; we’re partial to the Chocolate Covered Strawberry.

From San Francisco to Sonoma

Montage Healdsburg

One hour but actually many worlds away—Sonoma remains the best quick escape for those in SF proper. Head across the Golden Gate Bridge and toward vineyards, rolling hills, and foodie heaven. We recommend making the new Montage Healdsburg your base. Opening this fall, the bungalow-style resort is located amongst acres of vineyards and oak tree groves.

Cabanas line the pool, overlooking the vineyards, and there are a variety of recreational activities—both on and off-site—on offer. The wine experiences, though, as expected, are really the draw. Engage in tastings at the many wineries nearby—make sure to pick up some extra bottles to bring home.
